Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, and there is no guaranteed way to prevent type 2 diabetes. However, the most effective methods include lifestyle changes, such as eating healthy. All though the reason is unknown, whole grains especially play a part in diabetes prevention. Getting more physical activity helps to lower blood sugar and boost insulin sensitivity. Losing extra weight can be vital for prevention- those who are overweight are at much higher risk of developing diabetes. In one major study, participants who lost about seven percent of initial body weight and exercised regularly reduced the risk of developing the disorder by nearly sixty percent.
